Business name registration

A business name is the name your business operates under. You need to register a business name if you conduct business under a name other than your own.

Registering a business name in Australia is a process that can be completed through the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). LINK TO ASIC

Here are the basic steps for registering a business name in Australia:

  1. Check the availability of the business name by searching the ASIC Connect website or by contacting them.

  2. Choose a unique business name that is not already registered or too similar to an existing business name.

  3. Go to the ASIC Connect website and select the option to register a new business name.

  4. Fill in the required information, including your business name, ABN, and your contact details.

  5. Choose the period of time for which you wish to register your business name, which can be up to 3 years.

  6. Pay the registration fee, which is currently $37 for one year, $74 for two years and $111 for three years.

  7. Review and confirm your business name registration details and submit your application.

  8. Wait for the registration to be processed. This typically takes a few days, but can take up to a week.

  9. Once your business name has been registered, you will receive a certificate of registration, which serves as proof of your business name registration.

  10. Update your business name registration if you need to change any of the details, such as the business address or director information.

Note: You'll need to renew your registration every one or three years, and it's a good idea to check trademarks and domain name availability too.
